Antequera's Alcazaba, Medieval fortress in Antequera, Spain.
Antequera's Alcazaba sits on a hilltop and features two main towers, the Torre del Homenaje and Torre Blanca, connected by defensive stone walls. The ruins still display the original structure of this fortified stronghold.
The fortress was built in the 14th century over Roman foundations and later taken by Christian forces under Ferdinand of Antequera in 1410 after a five-month siege. This victory marked a turning point in control of the region.
The fortress displays a blend of Islamic military design and Christian additions that came after the conquest. A small bell tower from the 16th century, added by the new rulers, remains visible and shapes how the place looks today.
Reaching the fortress requires climbing steep paths, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Opening hours vary by season, so checking ahead saves time.
The Torre del Homenaje ranks among the largest keeps in al-Andalus, surpassed only by the Comares Tower in Granada. This size reflects the fortress's former importance as a major power center.
