Antequera, Historical municipality in Andalusia, Spain.
Antequera is a city in Málaga Province, Andalusia, Spain, spread across a wide area between mountain ranges and farmland. Streets wind through a historic center with old churches, convents and whitewashed houses, while olive groves and open plains begin at the edges.
The area was settled in prehistoric times before Romans, Visigoths and later Moorish rulers established fortifications and settlements here. In 1410 Christian forces took control and turned it into an important stronghold in the region.
The name comes from Roman times when the settlement was called Anticaria, and today buildings and streets still show traces of that long past. Locals gather in the squares and enjoy views of the surrounding peaks from café terraces, while children play between the old walls.
The city sits on rail lines and motorways, so travelers can arrive from several directions, and the center is easy to explore on foot. Outside the summer months temperatures are more comfortable for longer walks through the steep lanes and up to viewpoints.
In a nearby park limestone blocks form strange towers and canyons shaped by thousands of years of weathering that look like surreal sculptures. Walking trails pass between these rock formations and offer repeated surprises as the shapes and views of the surrounding land change.
