Edificio Grassy, Eclectic architecture building at Gran Via, Madrid, Spain
Edificio Grassy is a building in eclectic style on Gran Via in Madrid, occupying a triangular plot at the corner with Calle Caballero de Gracia. A rounded corner tower crowned with Renaissance-style details rises above the roofline and gives the structure its recognizable profile along the avenue.
Architect Eladio Laredo designed the building in 1916, and it was completed in 1917. It was built during the years when Gran Via was taking shape as Madrid's main modern boulevard, transforming the city center along with it.
The circular tower at the corner gives the building a presence that pedestrians notice from far along Gran Via. The jewelry store on the ground floor has been part of the street's life for generations, drawing shoppers and passersby alike.
The building sits at a major intersection on Gran Via and is easy to spot on foot from either direction. A visit to the clock museum in the basement requires booking ahead, but the jewelry store at street level is open to anyone who steps in.
The basement holds a collection of around 500 timepieces made between the 16th and 19th centuries, a detail that most people walking along Gran Via never suspect. Many of the clocks and watches in the collection still work and come from workshops across Europe.
