Edificio de viviendas Casa de las Mariposas, Residential building in central Almería, Spain
Edificio de viviendas Casa de las Mariposas is a residential building in the center of Almería, standing at the corner of Calle Granada and the Puerta de Purchena square. It rises four floors and features a corner tower topped with a dome that marks the intersection clearly.
The architect Trinidad Cuartara designed the building in 1909, replacing an inn that previously occupied the site. It was commissioned to reflect the prosperity of Almería's wealthier residents at the turn of the century.
The building takes its popular name from the butterfly ornaments decorating its tower, which gave it a nickname that locals still use today. These small carved details are easy to spot from the street and remain a talking point for anyone passing through the area.
The building stands at a busy central crossroads that is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city center. The best views of the facade and tower come from stepping back onto the opposite sidewalks around the intersection.
A wine glass placed inside the tower during the 1911 inauguration ceremony stayed there for nearly a century, through bombings and all. It was only found again around 99 years later during renovation work on the building.
