Refugios de la Guerra Civil Española de Almería, Underground shelter museum in Almería, Spain.
Refugios de la Guerra Civil Española is an underground network of roughly 4.5 kilometers of tunnels running beneath Almería. The site includes reconstructed areas such as storage rooms, living quarters, and a medical station that show how this shelter system was organized.
Construction of the tunnels began in February 1937 in response to air attacks and was completed in 1938 to protect residents from bombing. This shelter system developed during the Spanish Civil War, one of the most destructive conflicts of the 20th century.
The tunnels show how residents lived and worked underground during the bombing campaigns. You can see rooms for storage, living spaces, and medical care that reflect daily life beneath the city.
Visits take place Tuesday through Saturday, with morning sessions from 10:30 to 13:30 and evening hours that vary between winter and summer. It is worth checking the current opening times beforehand, as they change depending on the season.
This tunnel network is the largest of its kind open to the public anywhere in Europe. Many visitors are unaware that some rooms are so small you must crouch or crawl to reach them.
