Puerta de San Juan, Bermeo

Puerta de San Juan, Bermeo, Medieval door in Bermeo, Spain

The Puerta de San Juan is a medieval gate structure in Bermeo featuring a tower with an entrance passage and wall sections extending on both sides. The construction includes arrow slits for defense in the upper levels and crenellations that were restored in recent times.

Built in the early 14th century, this gate was part of the fortifications that protected Bermeo from threats on land and sea. It survives today as one of the few remaining sections of the town's original medieval wall system.

This structure reflects the connection between the town and its port through its position and design. It served as a control point where goods and people moved between the harbor and the inner town, shaping how the place developed.

The gate stands in the heart of Bermeo's old town, easily accessible on foot from the waterfront. The best view of its structure comes from the street in front, where you can see all the architectural details without obstruction.

The structure blends pointed Gothic arches on its outer face with segmental arches inside, showing how building styles evolved while the gate remained in use. This mix of architectural forms tells the story of construction practices across different periods.
