Bermeo

Bermeo is a coastal municipality in Bizkaia province with a deep-sea port serving the region. The town sits at an elevation of about 11 meters and combines residential neighborhoods with maritime infrastructure.

Founded in 1201, the settlement grew into a regional center during the 15th century. Its role as provincial capital from 1476 to 1602 marked a period of administrative importance before shifting to other towns.

The Fishermen's Museum tells the story of how fishing shaped daily life and community bonds in this coastal area. Visitors can see tools, boats, and objects that reveal how residents depended on the sea for their livelihood.

Regular bus services connect the area to nearby cities like Bilbao, making it easy to visit from larger urban centers. The town hall at Sabino Arana Goiri Square provides information and serves as a helpful landmark for orientation.

Only one tower survives from the roughly 30 medieval fortifications that once protected this settlement. This remaining structure, now home to the Fishermen's Museum, stands as the sole reminder of the town's defensive architecture from centuries past.
