Conservas Ormaza, empresa de Bermeo y edificio protegido
Conservas Ormaza is a factory in Bermeo that processed fish and other foods into canned goods while housing an apartment building and condominium. The structure combines production areas with residential spaces under one roof.
The factory was built in 1942 replacing earlier facilities founded by Ruperto Ormaza in 1923. In 2020, the Basque government declared it a protected heritage site.
The name Ormaza comes from founder Ruperto Ormaza, whose family ran the business for generations. The building shows how work and home life were intertwined within a single industrial space.
The site is now open for visits and workshops offering insight into traditional canning methods. Its simple, functional architecture with sturdy walls and large doors makes it easy to navigate through the production areas.
The building unusually combined living quarters with factory floor, allowing the family to live directly above the production facility. This arrangement, now adapted into apartments and a condominium, represents a rare example of early industrial architecture in the Basque region.
