Castle of Manqueospese, Medieval castle in Mironcillo, Spain.
The Castle of Manqueospese is a medieval fortress in Mironcillo, in the province of Ávila, built directly onto rocky terrain that shapes its layout. The walls follow the contours of the rock and the whole structure overlooks the valley below.
Work on the castle started in the late 15th century under Pedro Dávila, but disputes over the boundary with the Ávila region interrupted progress for years. Esteban Dávila eventually took over and brought the project to completion.
The name Manqueospese roughly translates as "stay even if it weighs on you," which hints at a place meant to hold its ground no matter the cost. Visitors who look closely at the stonework can still see how the walls were built to resist rather than welcome.
The castle is privately owned, so a visit requires prior arrangement, best made by contacting the Mironcillo town hall in advance. Planning ahead is strongly recommended, as access is not guaranteed without prior agreement.
The walls of the castle show early defensive features alongside Renaissance details added in the 16th century, making it possible to read the building's history just by looking at it. Few fortresses in the region display such a clear overlap of two different construction periods in a single structure.
