Castle of Castillo de Garcimuñoz

Castillo de Garcimuñoz is a medieval fortress with four round towers positioned at each corner and thick defensive walls enclosing a central courtyard. The inner space displays Gothic architectural details that reveal construction methods from that era.

The Marquis of Villena commissioned its construction in 1458, replacing an earlier Arab fortress from the 12th century on the same site. This marked a shift from older defensive systems to new forms suited to medieval warfare tactics.

The chapel of Saint John the Baptist stands within the fortress walls and shows how religious life merged with military purposes. The space reflects how faith and defense were intertwined in daily life here.

The site is walkable and allows views of the courtyard and towers from multiple angles as you move through the structure. Wear sturdy shoes and expect uneven ground and some steep stairs when exploring the interior spaces.

A 2016 restoration added contemporary artistic pieces and colored structures to the parade ground while keeping the original medieval walls untouched. This blend of old and new creates an unexpected visual contrast at this otherwise historical site.
