Alarcón Reservoir, reservoir in Spain

Alarcón Reservoir is a large artificial lake in the Castilla-La Mancha region of Spain, formed by damming the Júcar River. The water spreads across a broad valley surrounded by low hills, dry grasslands, and patches of pine forest.

The dam was built in the 1950s to regulate the flow of the Júcar River and provide water for farming across a dry region of central Spain. Over the decades, the area around the water gradually became a place for outdoor activities as well.

The reservoir sits just below the medieval village of Alarcón, and the view from the water looking up toward the castle walls is something many visitors remember long after their trip. Locals tend to come here in the cooler hours of the day, walking the edges of the water or sitting on the banks.

The area is best visited in spring or early autumn, when temperatures are comfortable for walking along the waterside paths. In summer, the heat can be strong during midday, so morning or evening visits are a better choice.

The village of Alarcón sits on a narrow peninsula almost entirely surrounded by the reservoir, which means you see water on nearly every side as you approach from the road. This same geography made the settlement a natural fortress centuries before the dam existed.
