Castillo de las Caldas, Oviedo, Medieval castle in Las Caldas, Spain.
Castillo de las Caldas, also called Castillo de Priorio, is a castle in Las Caldas, a small locality within the municipality of Oviedo in northern Spain. Two towers rise at either end of the main structure, with stone walls partly covered in ivy and a wider estate that includes several additional buildings.
A first fortification at this site is believed to have been built in the 8th century under King Alfonso II as a defense against raids by Hisham I. The building standing today was constructed in the 19th century on the foundations of that earlier medieval structure.
The castle is also known as Castillo de Priorio because it belonged for centuries to the parish of San Juan de Priorio. Visitors who ask locals for directions may hear this alternative name more often than the official one.
The estate is privately owned and can only be visited by invitation or with the owner's explicit permission, so it is worth contacting ahead of any visit. The main entrance is located near Las Caldas Spa, close to the Gafo River.
The estate contains the remains of a 19th-century mill with three millstones, a trace of the working life that once took place here alongside the castle. Today the same grounds also hold a swimming pool and a golf practice area, showing how differently the space is used now.
