Castillo de las Caldas, Oviedo, Medieval castle in Las Caldas, Spain.
Castillo de las Caldas is a fortress in Las Caldas, Oviedo, featuring two tall towers on its flanks with visible battlements and stone walls covered in ivy, surrounded by dense trees. The grounds extend across a larger estate that holds additional structures alongside the main fortification.
The original fortress dates to the 8th century and was built under King Alfonso II as protection against attacks by Hisham I. The present structure was constructed in the 19th century on the ruins of this medieval fortification.
The fortress was closely connected to the Oviedo Bishopric and belonged to the San Juan de Priorio parish, which is why it is also known as Castillo de Priorio. This ecclesiastical link shaped the site's importance across the centuries.
Access to the private estate requires an invitation and entry is at the main gate near Las Caldas Spa, situated alongside the Gafo River. The site is accessible only to registered visitors with the owner's permission.
The grounds contain the remains of a 19th-century mill with three millstones, which testify to the site's former economic use. Today the estate shares space with modern facilities including a swimming pool and a golf practice area.
