Monument to General Elorza, urban sculpture in Oviedo, Spain
The Monument to General Elorza is a bronze sculpture located in the gardens of the former arms factory in Trubia. It features a portrait bust of the general with two cannons arranged in a cross formation in front of it, and a pyramid structure made from artillery pieces stands behind.
The sculpture was created in 1923 by artist Josep Piquer i Duart to honor General Elorza, who lived from 1798 to 1873. Elorza served as director of the Trubia arms factory, where he modernized operations and founded both a vocational school and an artistic production section.
The monument is freely accessible in the factory gardens and can be visited at any time. The location offers a quiet setting surrounded by historical structures, making it suitable for a leisurely walk with views of the surrounding landscape.
The sculpture incorporates two 18th-century bronze cannons that were repurposed as part of the composition. These recycled artillery pieces add an extra historical layer to the work, connecting two different periods of arms production.
