Meandros del Nora, Natural Monument in Les Regueres and Oviedo, Spain.
Meandros del Nora is a natural monument where the Nora River forms dramatic bends, cutting steeply through rock with slopes exceeding 70 degrees. The river drops more than 100 meters as it winds through this gorge-like section.
The site received Natural Monument status in 2003 and was later designated as a Special Conservation Area within the Natura 2000 network. This protection recognizes its geological and ecological importance.
The observation points like Mirador de la Peñona give visitors different views of how the river has shaped the landscape. You can watch the water's work from several angles across the site.
The site is about 20 minutes by car from Oviedo, with parking available in the nearby villages of Rañeces and Priañes. Spaces are limited, so arriving early helps ensure you find a spot to explore the area.
Otters, black kites, Egyptian vultures, and peregrine falcons inhabit this river section alongside herons and kingfishers. The steep gorge provides nesting sites and hunting grounds for these specialized birds and mammals.
