Castillo de Matrera, Medieval castle in Villamartín, Spain
The Castle of Matrera stands on Mount Pajarete with a large fortified wall enclosing a central courtyard and two entrance gates flanked by defensive towers.
Omar Ibn Hafsún constructed the fortress in the ninth century to protect the Roman city of Iptuci, marking the start of centuries of territorial conflicts.
The structure received national monument status in 1949 and became a Cultural Heritage Site in 1985, representing both Moorish and Christian architectural elements.
Visitors can reach the castle through Cerro Pajarete in Villamartín, with geographic coordinates at 36 degrees 48 minutes north and 5 degrees 33 minutes west.
The 2016 restoration project applied modern construction techniques to preserve the original volume while maintaining historical materials, generating international architectural discussions.
