San Joaquin Castle

San Joaquin Castle is a square fortress in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with circular towers positioned at each corner and a central courtyard. The courtyard is bordered by structures on both sides, creating the building's defining geometric form.

Governor Juan Nunez de la Fuente ordered the construction of this fortress in 1586, with Italian architect Leonardo Torriani creating the initial plans. This early phase established the military work designed to protect the coast from attack.

The fortress takes its name from Saint Joachim and served as a key landmark in local consciousness for centuries. Visitors can observe how its solid walls reflect the military importance this place held in the region's past.

The fortress lies between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de La Laguna, making it accessible from either historic city. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the outer walls and fortification layout requires some walking.

Two of the fortress towers were specifically designed for gunpowder storage, showing the careful planning of the structure. The building later served as a military prison and dovecote, reflecting its changing purposes after its original military role.
