Castle of Santiuste, Corduente

Castle of Santiuste is a fortress featuring four square corner towers reaching four stories in height, with a central courtyard divided by a wall containing semicircular arches. The layout of towers and courtyard forms a fortified structure typical of medieval defensive architecture.

Construction began in 1434 after Juan Ruiz de Molina received permission from King Juan II of Castile to build the fortress as defense against the Crown of Aragon. This stronghold was part of a strategic defensive system protecting the border regions.

The entrance displays an arched gateway bearing the Ruiz de Molina family crest, which reflects their noble standing in the region. Such heraldic symbols tell the story of the power these lords held over their lands.

To visit the interior, arrange a tour through the Tourism Office of Molina de Aragón or contact the local tourism organization in advance. Access to the castle is by guided tour only, so planning ahead is necessary for your visit.

The 1755 earthquake centered in Lisbon caused significant structural damage that went unrepaired for more than two centuries until a private owner undertook extensive restoration in 1971. This long gap between damage and recovery offers insight into how this fortress endured neglect before its revival.
