Castle of La Concepción

Castle of La Concepción, Medieval castle on Concepción Hill in Cartagena, Spain

The Castle of La Concepción sits on a central hill overlooking the harbor with stone walls and military fortifications that shape the Cartagena skyline. The courtyard offers views of the city and sea, while the preserved structures from different periods remain clearly visible.

King Alfonso X ordered the fortress's construction in the 13th century using materials from former Roman and Islamic buildings in the area. The building style reflects how earlier cultures were incorporated into the new structure.

The castle houses an interpretation center showing how Cartagena developed across different periods, from Carthaginian times through the medieval era. Visitors can see exhibits that explain the city's layered past and cultural influences.

Access to the summit is made easier by a panoramic elevator that removes the need to climb the hill on foot. A visit works well at any time of year, with sunny days offering the best views of the surroundings.

The castle's keep contains an air raid siren from the Spanish Civil War that once alerted residents to incoming attacks. This artifact serves as a reminder of a turbulent period in the city's past.
