Cementerio de San Juan Bautista, Public cemetery in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Spain.
Cementerio de San Juan Bautista is a cemetery organized with straight paths dividing the space into sections, with cypress trees marking a central route that leads to a neoclassical chapel. The burial ground expands across two main zones: the original area containing the chapel and the newer section added in 1903.
The burial ground opened in 1814 and represented a major shift in Spanish funeral customs by moving burials outside church property. This change reflected modern European practices and ended the tradition of interring the dead within church walls.
The tombs display marble and stone craftsmanship that shows how families wished to be remembered in the 1800s. Walking through reveals the social standing of different burials and the work of local artisans who built these monuments.
The original graves near the chapel occupy the older section, while the expanded area dates from 1903 and lies adjacent to it. The grounds are easy to navigate on foot, with clear pathways connecting the different burial zones.
Juan Rodríguez Toste became the first person buried here when the gates opened on July 4, 1814. His burial set a naming tradition that many other Spanish cemeteries would later adopt.
