El Escobonal

El Escobonal is a mountain village in the Güímar district of Tenerife, located at 503 meters elevation in an area surrounded by volcanic formations. The settlement is home to nearly 900 residents and has essential facilities including a parish church, primary school, sports center, and a cultural space called La Bóveda.

The settlement takes its name from the shrub Chamaecytisus proliferus, which grows naturally throughout the mountainous terrain and was once used as fuel and animal feed. This plant resource shaped local livelihoods for generations.

The village holds celebrations in March honoring Saint Joseph and in August with processions and traditional dances that reflect local customs. These gatherings show how residents keep their heritage alive through shared festivities.

The village sits in a mountainous area best reached by car, with narrow winding roads that require careful driving. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and come prepared for changing mountain weather conditions.

The Tagoror Cultural Agache serves as the central hub for preserving local knowledge and houses both a library and museum in one space. This facility keeps the community's history and traditions accessible to both residents and visitors.
