Barranco de Badajoz

Barranco de Badajoz is a natural ravine near Güímar in Tenerife with steep canyon walls on both sides. The valley is covered with native plants that thrive in the dry island conditions.

The area served as an important settlement for Guanche people during pre-colonial times. Archaeological discoveries in the canyon have revealed burial sites and remains that show the valley was densely inhabited.

The ravine takes its name from the indigenous Guanche people who inhabited this land long ago. Visitors can still see caves scattered through the canyon that served practical purposes for the people who lived here.

A marked hiking path runs through the ravine with rest spots along the way. The trail is accessible most days but requires sturdy footwear and plenty of water, especially during warmer months.

Researchers have discovered fossil remains of extinct bird species in the canyon caves that once lived on the island. These findings help scientists understand how wildlife on Tenerife changed over time.
