González-Lacasa Reservoir, Stausee in Spanien
González-Lacasa Reservoir is a large body of water in La Rioja filled by the Iregua river and surrounded by low, forested hills. The water covers the submerged village of Los Molinos, whose ruins emerge when water levels drop, while a concrete dam approximately 70 meters high holds the water in place across the valley.
Construction of the dam began in 1932 and was completed in 1962, requiring the relocation of residents from the village of Los Molinos. This project under Franco's regime created a major water storage system that has since supported agriculture and industry throughout La Rioja.
The reservoir serves as a gathering place where the local community and visitors enjoy water activities together. The Club Náutico El Rasillo creates a social space where families and groups spend their free time, particularly during summer months when water sports and outdoor meals become part of the local rhythm.
The reservoir is easily accessible by bus and has ample parking for cars. At Club Náutico El Rasillo you can rent boats, take courses in water sports, and use facilities including toilets, showers, and changing rooms.
An annual boat race called Bandera de La Rioja has taken place since the late 1990s, with teams competing in traditional trainera boats, which is unusual for an inland reservoir. Since 2007 the race has been part of a larger regional competition league, attracting teams from across the area.
