Embalse de Serones, embalse en el río Voltoya
Embalse de Serones is a large water reservoir in the province of Ávila, built on the Voltoya River and covering about 450 acres of water surface. A concrete dam roughly 17 meters high and stretching over 300 meters across the river was completed in 1988 to store water for drinking supply to the city of Ávila.
The dam was completed in 1988 as a relatively recent construction designed to control the flow of the Voltoya River and prevent flooding in the surrounding area. It was built to meet the need for reliable water storage for local communities and the city of Ávila.
The reservoir serves as a gathering place for locals seeking peace and connection with nature, where people observe wildlife and enjoy quiet moments by the water. The site holds special meaning during early morning and late afternoon hours, when the light over the water draws visitors to experience the landscape's simple beauty.
The shores are gentle and easy to walk along, with mostly open land covered in grass and bushes, making exploration straightforward. Visitors should arrive in early morning or late afternoon for the best light and quietest conditions.
The area hosts a range of birds including herons, egrets, and cormorants that come to fish, particularly during migration seasons when traveling birds visit the region. Below the dam and near the bridge, angling for species like carp and barbel is popular, and introduced species such as catfish have become part of the local fish population.
