The church features three tall naves separated by slender columns supporting ribbed vaults, with a central nave larger than the lateral ones.
Construction of the church began in 1529 under architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, replacing a 13th-century Romanesque structure at the same location.
The Renaissance main altarpiece, designed by Jesuit Andrés Ruiz in 1586, rises 20 meters with life-size sculptures and paintings by Alonso de Herrera.
