Santa María Real de Párraces

Santa María Real de Párraces is a former abbey in Bercial built with sandstone and granite, featuring multiple courtyards arranged around the main structures. The southern courtyard contains a distinctive two-level arcade section with a central granite fountain and water cistern that remains intact.

The abbey was founded in medieval times and reached its height between the 14th and 15th centuries as one of the most influential religious institutions in Castile. In the mid-1500s, it transitioned into a seminary where theology and classical studies were taught to students in residence.

The place served as a center of learning and spiritual life for centuries, drawing monks and students to its halls. You can sense this religious purpose today as you walk through the courtyards and buildings that once bustled with daily monastic activities.
