Iglesia de Saint John the Baptist, Gothic church in central Málaga, Spain
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is a church with Gothic architecture distinguished by a rectangular tower topped with an elliptical dome at its entrance. Inside, white walls frame carved altarpieces and multiple chapels that serve different functions and purposes.
The building was founded in 1487 following the end of Moorish rule in the region. Its tower was completed in 1543, and major repairs were made after the 1680 earthquake caused significant damage.
Two fraternities use the building for their Holy Week processions and religious ceremonies in dedicated chapels that they maintain. These brotherhoods have shaped the church's role in the local community for generations.
Access is through the main entrance marked by the distinctive tower, and the interior is open for both religious services and cultural visits. Check opening times beforehand, as the building remains an active place of worship.
Inside the church stands a notable statue of Saint John from the 17th century carved by Francisco Ortiz. The building's exterior also displays murals from the 18th century that show its artistic history.
