Iglesia de San Juan Evangelista

Iglesia de San Juan Evangelista is a parish church in central Almeria featuring a single nave crossed by thick pilasters and semicircular arches. The interior is defined by sturdy walls that create a solid, grounded feeling throughout the space.

The church was built in the 17th century on the site of a major mosque that stood there around 965. Its construction followed the Christian reconquest of the city and marked a turning point in Almeria's religious past.

The church preserves the prayer niche and wall elements from the former mosque, with elaborate stucco decorations from the 12th century still visible today. These remains show how two faiths once shared this space.

The church sits on Calle General Luque in central Almeria and opens for services and visits during regular hours. When planning a visit, keep in mind that services take priority, and access may be limited during these times.

The main facade displays Mannerist style with cushioned stonework and half-columns supporting a triangular pediment crowned with Bishop Portocarrero's coat of arms. This architectural detail reveals the role of high-ranking church leaders in commissioning the building.
