Église Saint Laurent, Baroque revival church in Lavapiés, Madrid, Spain.
The iglesia de San Lorenzo is a Baroque revival church in the Lavapiés district of Madrid with a simple facade design and a statue of Saint Lawrence positioned above the entrance portal. The building features stone construction and displays typical characteristics of the revival style, with clean lines and an upright presence in the neighborhood.
The church was built beginning in November 1662 and consecrated in 1670, later becoming independent from the San Sebastian parish in 1805. After the building was destroyed in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, complete reconstruction took place in 1950.
The church serves as a center for devotion to Saint Lawrence in the Lavapiés neighborhood and draws worshippers during its annual feast days. It reflects the religious traditions of the area that remain active in local celebrations and services today.
The building is located on Doctor Piga Street and is easily accessible via Lavapiés metro station on line 3 or multiple bus routes including the M1. The area is well-served by public transportation, and the location is central to the neighborhood, making it reachable on foot from many nearby points.
The church features a remarkable reconstruction after its near-total destruction and preserves a piece of the neighborhood's history in this way. This mid-20th century rebuilding makes the church a testament to the resilience of the Lavapiés area.
