Church of Santa María del Camino

Church of Santa María del Camino is a Romanesque building structured with three naves ending in semicircular apses, supported by sturdy columns and barrel vault ceilings throughout. The interior layout shows the solid proportions typical of this architectural style from the medieval period.

The building was constructed in the 12th century as a Romanesque structure serving the local community and pilgrims. Major changes occurred in 1635 when a square Baroque apse was added and the sacristy was rebuilt, reflecting later religious and architectural preferences.

The southern doorway features carved figures of biblical and legendary heroes, telling stories of faith and medieval life to passing pilgrims. These stone figures at the facade connect this place to the Way of Saint James, a pilgrimage route that shaped the entire town.

The church sits in Plaza de Santa María and can be entered through the southwest door via a columned portico. Visitors will find the location easily walkable and well-integrated into the town center.

Inside, it holds a 13th-century statue of Mary, a 14th-century Christ figure, and a 17th-century painting in a chapel dedicated to a local saint. These works span centuries and represent the different periods of artistic devotion that shaped the interior.
