Gypsum karst of Sorbas, Geological formation in Almería Province, Spain
The gypsum karst of Sorbas is a large geological formation in Almería Province featuring an extensive network of underground caves with stalactites, stalagmites, and crystalline mineral deposits. The terrain spreads across several kilometers and displays varied rock formations that developed over long periods.
This landscape formed millions of years ago when Atlantic waters flooded the Mediterranean area and left thick gypsum deposits. Later, tectonic forces shaped these deposits into the karst landscape we see today with its characteristic caves and formations.
The visitor center Los Yesares shows how the landscape is used and understood by people who know it. You can see how the desert zone, the cave systems, and the river environment are connected, and how specialized plants survive there.
There are several routes with different difficulty levels, ranging from short walks to demanding tours that require climbing skills. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for uneven ground and narrow passages inside the caves.
Plant species found nowhere else in the world live here, such as the Sorbas sunrose and Sorbas narcissus, adapted to extreme conditions in the caves and karst landscape. These plants are so specialized for these harsh surroundings that they cannot thrive anywhere else.
