Walls of León

The fortification stretches 2.5 kilometers around León with stone walls measuring 5 meters in thickness and 8 meters in height, featuring semi-circular towers.

The Legio VI Victrix constructed the initial fortification, while the Legio VII Gemina enhanced it with stronger stone walls at the end of the first century.

The walls form part of the Way of Saint James pilgrimage route through the province of León, receiving recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Visitors can access multiple viewing points along Avenida de los Cubos and Calle Carreras, where sections of the original Roman fortifications remain visible.

The eastern section reveals the foundations of Puerta del Obispo gate, displaying Gothic architectural elements preserved within an archaeological crypt.
