Museo Minero de Escucha

Museo Minero de Escucha occupies a genuine coal mine where visitors descend roughly 200 meters underground to explore the original tunnels and galleries used by miners. The site preserves the working infrastructure and equipment that miners relied on to extract coal from the seam.

The coal mine operated for decades before its transformation into a museum in 2002 to safeguard the industrial heritage of the Teruel region. This conversion rescued the knowledge and memories of the local mining tradition from being lost.

The exhibits display mining tools and personal belongings that reveal how miners worked and lived underground across different eras. Walking through the galleries, you see the equipment that shaped their daily experience in the darkness below.

Visits require advance booking and begin with a descent in a mining cart, giving you an authentic feel for how miners entered the workings below. Wear warm clothing since underground temperatures stay cool year-round.

This is one of the few places in Spain where visitors can see a natural coal seam and understand how it actually appears beneath the earth's surface. The visible seam demonstrates the extraction methods that generations of workers relied on.
