Pozo Fondón, Historical mining complex in Langreo, Spain
Pozo Fondón is a mining site in Langreo containing a machine house built in 1915, two cast iron headgears rising about 31 and 28 meters tall, and administrative buildings. The complex now houses a documentation center and serves as headquarters for the Mining Rescue Brigade.
The site began in 1840 as the La Nalona mine and was rebuilt in 1905 as the second vertical shaft in Asturias under Duro Felguera. During the Spanish Civil War, it operated as a penal labor facility where prisoners worked under harsh conditions.
The chapel dedicated to Saint Barbara stands as a reminder of the patron saint of miners and reflects the spiritual traditions that shaped this mining community.
The site is accessible as an industrial heritage location and maintains extensive archives of mining history. It makes sense to allow time to explore the buildings and structures to understand how the shaft operated and was organized.
Ceramic murals by artist Luis Suco Suárez decorate the grounds and represent an artistic acknowledgment of mining tradition. These works blend industrial architecture with local creative expression.
