Nitrastur factory, Langreo, Industrial complex in La Felguera, Spain.
Nitrastur factory in La Felguera is a large industrial complex with warehouses, cooling towers, storage silos, and former worker housing near the Nalón River. The site displays the typical layout of a 20th century chemical production facility with multiple production buildings.
The factory was founded in 1954 and produced synthetic ammonia and sulfates for industrial use. It closed in 1997 after more than four decades of operation as a major employer in the region.
The factory was more than just a workplace for employees. It provided sports facilities, a library, and photography classes, reflecting how the company invested in workers' everyday lives.
The complex is easiest to reach by driving along the Nalón River road and watching for the old production buildings. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the site is sprawling and has uneven ground.
The complex was designed by engineer Carlos Fernández Casado using innovative concrete structures with transverse arches and cantilevered roof systems. These building techniques were unusually advanced for industrial buildings of that era.
