Engineer Carlos Fernández Casado Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in León, Spain

The Engineer Carlos Fernández Casado Bridge is a cable-stayed road structure spanning the Barrios de Luna Reservoir and connecting traffic across the landscape with modern steel construction. Two tall towers support the wide roadway through a network of 220 steel cables anchored from above.

The structure was completed in 1983 and gained worldwide attention as the longest cable-stayed main span at that moment. This achievement marked a turning point in bridge engineering, demonstrating that such distances could be successfully achieved.

The bridge takes its name from a respected Spanish engineer, honoring his influence on the country's building traditions. This naming choice reflects how local communities recognize technical achievement in their infrastructure.

The bridge is open daily to vehicle traffic and serves as a key connection for regional highways. Best viewing points are from the reservoir shore, where the full span and tower height become visible without leaving your vehicle or stopping on the roadway itself.

The bridge was a technical marvel of its time with its main span, and the structure continues to define the character of this reservoir region. Javier Manterola designed this solution as a personal tribute to a colleague, creating a rare union of function and recognition.
