Devesa del Saler beach, Protected beach in Natural Park of El Saler, Valencia, Spain.
Devesa del Saler beach is a natural beach inside a protected park south of Valencia, running for nearly 5 kilometers along the Mediterranean coast. It is about 35 meters wide on average, backed by pine trees and dune formations on the inland side.
In the 1960s and 1970s, large hotel developments were planned and partly built along this stretch of coast, which would have changed its character entirely. The city of Valencia later bought back the land and demolished those buildings, leading to the area's formal protection in 1988.
The name Devesa comes from the Valencian word for a wooded pasture, referring to the pine forest that runs directly behind the sand. Visitors can walk from the shore into the trees within a few steps, which gives the place a feel quite different from a typical city beach.
The beach is reachable by public bus from Valencia and has basic facilities such as restrooms and lifeguard posts during the summer season. The northern end tends to draw more visitors, while the southern section stays noticeably quieter throughout the day.
This beach is one of the few in Europe where you can watch a freshwater lake from the shoreline, as the Albufera sits just behind the dunes. The strip of land separating the two bodies of water is so narrow in places that both can be seen from a single point.
