The Vía Verde del Aceite is a converted railway line spanning 128 kilometers through Andalusia, crossing four tunnels and thirteen metal viaducts as it winds through the landscape. Restored railway stations sit along the route, providing stops and basic facilities for travelers.
This railway opened in 1893 to transport olive oil from Andalusia to Málaga's port and operated until 1985. After closure, the abandoned tracks were converted into a recreational path.
The route links several towns like Martos, Alcaudete, and Doña Mencía, where you can find olive oil production facilities and traditional buildings reflecting local life. These communities show how olive cultivation remains central to daily rhythms and local identity in the region.
The path maintains a gentle slope of at most 2-3 percent, making it manageable for visitors of various fitness levels. Accommodation and food options are available at several points along the route.
