Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Linarejos, Baroque church sanctuary in Linares, Spain.
The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Linarejos is a baroque church sanctuary with a main facade built in 1717 and a Virgin's Chamber added to the main chapel in 1722. The structure brings together architectural elements that were added over different periods, creating a unified religious space.
The original shrine dates to 1227 following a reported Marian apparition to a shepherd, while the current structure was built between 1638 and 1666. This second construction phase reflects how the site grew in importance and was replaced with a larger building.
The sanctuary serves as the center for the community's Marian celebrations and where the Virgin was crowned as Queen of the city in 2004. Visitors can see how devotion to her shapes the religious practices and daily life of local residents today.
The sanctuary welcomes visitors year-round for prayer and quiet reflection during regular mass services. As an active place of worship, respectful behavior is important when services or ceremonies are taking place.
The interior walls feature frescos painted between 1958 and 1961 by local artists Francisco Carulla and Francisco Baños Martos depicting religious scenes. These artworks come from painters who were closely connected to the community rather than imported famous masters.
