Plaiaundi, Protected wetland area in Irun, Spain
Plaiaundi is a protected wetland area at the mouth of the Bidasoa River near Irun, featuring lakes, forests, and meadows. The site spreads across roughly 23 hectares along Txingudi Bay.
The site underwent major restoration starting in 1998 to bring back the original wetland conditions. This work transformed the landscape to be closer to how it existed before human changes.
The interpretation center here teaches visitors about the importance of wetlands for nature and how they support local wildlife. You can learn about the plants and animals that make their home in this landscape.
The site has several observation points connected by trails about 2 kilometers long. Information panels along the way explain the natural features and local environment.
This is a crucial stopover for migratory birds traveling between northern Europe and southern Spain. Thousands of birds rest here during their long journey between continents.
