Ara Christi Charterhouse, El Puig

Ara Christi Charterhouse is a Renaissance monastery featuring four defensive towers, cloisters, a royal chamber, and a Gothic hall constructed within substantial stone walls. The complex combines religious spaces with military structures designed for protection and governance.

King James I of Aragon commissioned this monastery in 1237 following the conquest of Valencia from Muslim forces. The foundation symbolized Christian authority over the newly acquired territory.

The monastery displays Spanish Renaissance craftsmanship through its stonework and architectural details visible throughout the complex. The spaces were designed to serve both spiritual and everyday functions for those who lived here.
