Castell del Puig, Medieval castle in El Puig de Santa Maria, Spain.
Castell del Puig is a medieval fortress rising on a hilltop, where visitors can see preserved stone walls, defensive towers, and fortification remains spread across the elevated terrain. The layout reflects a strategic design intended to monitor and protect the main route toward Valencia and the surrounding region.
The castle was built by Arab rulers in the 11th century and subsequently changed hands between Muslim and Christian control over several centuries. The stronghold played a significant role in regional conflicts during the Reconquista period.
The fortress represents medieval military architecture and received recognition as a Cultural Heritage Site of Spain in 2002.
The castle grounds are accessible year-round and open to visitors without an entrance fee, allowing free exploration of the ruins. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the path up the slope is steep and the ground surfaces are uneven in places.
The castle features a moat and a separate tower connected by a bridge that enhanced guard visibility and defensive capabilities.
