Institut Pere Mata, Art Nouveau psychiatric hospital in Reus, Spain

The Institut Pere Mata comprises eleven pavilions spread throughout landscaped gardens, each connected by pathways and surrounded by green spaces. Brick walls, stone details, ceramic tiles, and mosaic work decorate the buildings, creating a cohesive architectural composition that reflects early 20th-century design principles.

Construction started in 1897 and continued until 1912 under architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, representing a major undertaking in mental health facility design. The project emerged during a period when progressive hospital ideas were spreading across Europe.

The Pavilion of the Distinguished displays the finest architectural details and retains original early 20th-century furnishings that reflect how wealthier patients lived during that era. This building offers insight into the social divisions that existed even within medical care at the time.

The historic sections are open to visitors with audio guides available in multiple languages. Since this remains an active hospital, it is important to check ahead which areas are accessible on your visit date.

The facility continues to operate as an active psychiatric hospital while specific sections are designated as national cultural sites open to the public. This dual role is uncommon, making it a place where medical care and historical preservation coexist.
