Matagalls, Mountain summit in Montseny Natural Park, Spain
Matagalls is a mountain summit in the Montseny Massif, sitting on the boundary of the municipalities of Viladrau, El Brull, and Montseny. The peak is made of phyllite and hornfels, two types of rock that give it a rough, dark surface that stands out from the forested slopes below.
The peak was known as Autora until around 1500, when it took on the name Matagalls that it carries today. Little is recorded about why the name changed, but the new name stuck firmly across the region.
The peak belongs to a group of three summits celebrated in Catalan mountain poetry and in regional traditions that are still alive today. Walkers who reach the top often find small offerings or markers left by locals, showing how personally people relate to this place.
The most common starting point for reaching the summit is Coll de Borderiol, which is accessible by road and clearly marked on hiking maps. Weather on the upper slopes can change fast, so setting off early and dressing in layers is a good habit whatever the season.
The people of Viladrau commonly refer to the mountain as La Cruz, after a cross that can be seen from the village below. This local name is used so naturally in everyday speech that many residents reach for it before the official name.
