Matagalls, Mountain summit in Montseny Natural Park, Spain
Matagalls is a mountain summit reaching 1697 meters within the Montseny Massif, shaped by phyllite and hornfels rock formations. These particular stone types give the peak its distinctive appearance against the surrounding landscape.
The peak was originally called Autora until its name changed to Matagalls around 1500. This shift in naming coincided with significant regional developments in Catalonia.
The peak forms part of a group of three summits that hold significance in Catalan mountain poetry and regional traditions. Local people connect these mountains to their cultural identity and regularly visit them throughout the year.
The SL-C82 hiking trail begins at Coll de Borderiol and takes about 4.5 hours for the full round trip. Start early in the day and bring plenty of water and sturdy hiking boots for the rocky terrain.
Local residents of Viladrau call the mountain simply 'La Cruz', a name that refers to the distinctive shape visible from their town. This local nickname reveals how closely people identify with the peak in their daily lives.
