Asil del Sant Crist, Catalan modernist church in Igualada, Spain.
Asil del Sant Crist is a Catalan modernist building in Igualada with uncut stone walls, pointed vaults, and stained glass windows. The structure was built with ribbed vaults supported by four monolithic stone columns from Gerona that form parabolic arches.
Construction started in 1931 through donations from the Castells sisters and was interrupted during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939. Work resumed and was completed in 1941 after the conflict ended.
The chapel displays stained glass windows showing the Holy Trinity, various saints, and scenes with Teresa de Jesús Jornet and elderly figures. These windows tell stories of compassion and care that reflect the spirit of the place.
The building is located at Milà i Fontanals 8 and functions as a residential care facility for the elderly managed by a religious community. Visitors should keep in mind that this is an active care facility and visits should be respectful and mindful of residents.
One of the stone columns bears the signature of architect Joan Rubió, making it a rare mark of craftsmanship. This personal mark allows visitors to trace the direct involvement of a leading modernist designer in the building's creation.
