Mercado de la Ribera

Mercado de la Ribera is a covered market in Bilbao's old quarter that holds fresh produce, meat, and seafood across several levels along the Nervion River. More than 60 vendors operate here daily, each with their own section offering goods to both shoppers and professional cooks.

The building was designed by Pedro Ispizua in 1929 with Art Deco details that reflected the architectural style of that era. This structure marked Bilbao's efforts to modernize its infrastructure during that period.

The market serves as a gathering place for Basque food culture, where you can find local producers selling their goods and experience how the region's culinary traditions come to life through the food on display.

The market sits close to bus stops and is easy to reach by public transit. Visiting in the morning gives you the best selection and a quieter experience than later in the day.

The interior has translucent floors that let natural light filter through, brightening the space while keeping it free from support columns. This 1920s design solution created an open shopping experience ahead of its time.
