Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción

Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción, Gothic parish church in Bujalance, Spain

The Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción is a Gothic parish church in Bujalance featuring three naves separated by pointed arches. The structure has an elongated rectangular shape and displays typical Gothic architectural elements with stone walls and pointed arch windows.

Construction of this church began around 1500 and extended over nearly a century before the main structure was completed. This lengthy building period was typical for large religious structures of that era and reflects the gradual development of the edifice.

The main altarpiece displays carved figures and gilded details from the 16th century, showcasing the artistic craftsmanship of that era. It represents one of the oldest works of its kind in the Córdoba region and draws visitors interested in religious art.

The building stands directly beside Plaza de Santa Ana, making it easy to locate and access. Visitors will find shaded areas around the plaza for resting, especially during warmer parts of the day.

The church tower was completed only in 1788 and displays a noticeable lean, having shifted slightly from vertical during its lengthy construction phase. This imperfection remains visible today and tells of the building challenges faced during the Renaissance era.
