Pantà del Pasteral, dam in La Cellera de Ter, Catalonia
Pantà del Pasteral is a large reservoir near La Cellera de Ter created by a dam that holds back the river Ter. The dam stretches across the valley with wide gates that control water flow and features a smooth concrete slope that controls how water is released.
Construction began in 1886 and the dam became operational in 1905 to generate electricity for local factories, especially the textile plant in Anglès. In 1960, the dam was raised to hold more water and increase its capacity for the growing region.
The name comes from the area where the reservoir was built. Visitors can still see the old poplar trees that were once grown here, which tell the story of the land's farming past and how the landscape has changed over time.
The reservoir is accessible via the old road to La Cellera de Ter, with a parking area near a restaurant before crossing the old bridge over the river. From there, it is easy to walk down to the water and explore the surrounding area.
Since the 1970s, water from the reservoir has been diverted to Barcelona and Girona, providing drinking water to these cities. The reservoir now serves both electricity generation and water supply needs for multiple towns across the region.
