Basílica de Santa Maria de Mataró, Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical church in Mataró, Spain

The Basílica de Santa Maria is a church combining Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements, rising in the center of Mataró's old town. The building features a single central nave flanked by side chapels, creating a structured interior space beneath a soaring height.

Construction of the current building began in 1675 under Milanese architect Ercolle Torrellio, replacing an earlier Romanesque church documented from 1054. The building's architectural layers show how styles evolved and merged across several centuries.

The Chapel of Sorrows displays works by artist Antoni Viladomat with traditional ecclesiastical paintings from that period. These decorative spaces reflect the religious artistic vision that shaped the community's spiritual life.

The building is easily accessible and welcomes visitors during religious services and special guided tours that explain its architectural evolution. It helps to check in advance since visiting hours may shift depending on church activities and events.

The meeting room of the Congregation of Sorrows has an octagonal shape and is fully covered with period paintings on its walls. This uncommon architectural detail and the continuous decoration throughout the space make this room a distinctive discovery for visitors.
