The Basilica of Santa Maria features a single nave with lateral chapels and stands 34.6 meters tall in the center of Mataró's old town.
Construction of the current building started in 1675 under Milanese architect Ercolle Torrellio, replacing an earlier Romanesque church documented from 1054.
The Chapel of Sorrows contains notable decorations and paintings by artist Antoni Viladomat, displaying traditional ecclesiastical art from the period.
The basilica maintains regular religious services and offers guided tours that explain the architectural evolution through Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical periods.
The meeting room of the Congregation of Sorrows presents an octagonal layout with a complete set of period paintings covering its walls.
