Embalse de La Pedrera, Stausee in Spanien
The Embalse de La Pedrera is a large reservoir in the Alicante province built to store water for irrigation and local supply. Its blue-green waters cover over 1200 hectares and are surrounded by rocky hills and dry, open landscape.
Construction of the dam began in the 1970s and was completed in the 1980s following studies that started in the 1960s. The project was designed to regulate water flow, control flooding, and distribute irrigation water across the region.
The reservoir has become part of local life, supporting agriculture and water supply for surrounding communities. Its presence shaped how people use the land and made outdoor activities a central part of the region's culture today.
The reservoir is easily accessible by car with no entry fees. Spring and fall offer the best weather, and visitors can use marked trails along the shoreline and through surrounding hills for walking and cycling.
The reservoir lies in a seismically active zone, and the dam was specially engineered to withstand earthquakes. Much of its water comes from the Tajo-Segura canal, a major water transfer system that brings water from distant regions to the area.
