Province of Alicante, Mediterranean province in eastern Spain
The province of Alicante contains 141 municipalities across nine distinct regions, from mountainous territories in the north to coastal areas along the Mediterranean Sea.
The territory of Alicante province changed hands multiple times between Islamic and Christian rulers until its final incorporation into the Kingdom of Valencia in 1247.
Local festivals in the province include the Mystery Play of Elche, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, and numerous Moors and Christians celebrations throughout the year.
The province maintains strong transportation connections through three major highways, a high-speed rail network, and the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández International Airport.
The Vega Baja region of Alicante produces over 40 percent of Spain's total pomegranate harvest, with most cultivation centered around the city of Elche.
